Lives of peasantry in medieval community
For the majority of peasants life was tough. Everyone had to work for long ours from sunup tp sundown. During the planting season the men would guide the ox-drawn plow while his wife goaded the ox into motion with a pointed stick. Children helped plant seeds, weeded, and took care of the animals. Peasants ate a simple diet of black bread with cabbages, peas, or onions as vegetables. If they lived near the river they might include fish as a meal. And in the night the family slept together in their one-room hut with the cows, chickens, pigs, or sheep.
Like farmers anywhere the peasants worked of course according to seasons. For example, in spring and autumn, they plowed and harvested, but in the summer they hayed. At other times times they either repaired fences, and performed other chores. Hunger was common for all peasants especially in winte season, this is because the when the harvest was exhausted and new crops had not yet ripened. Disease was huge and it spread and only a few that were capable of living beyond the age of 35.
Even their life was quite tough, nevertheless peasants still found ways to celebrate. They celebrated in occasions such as marriages, births. And they also had a week off from work on holidays like easter and christmas. Lots of other festivals had brought days off from work, and by celebrating peasants could feats on meats and of course they would be dancing and enjoying their time.
They all had many beliefs, in which they believed in elves, fairies and other natural spirits. They also had faith in love portiosn, spells and magic charm. And witches thought they could cast a spell with a mere look. Priests built churches with temples of ancient gods and villagers had sacrificed to the gods of the sun and rain to ensure good crops, and they also might bless their fields in the name of christ.
